Project Spotlight
Migrating to a Modern DCS System
A refinery with obsolete control equipment could not maintain its control systems. Replacement parts were hard to find, and the DCS vendor no longer supported the legacy DCS system. In addition, the legacy DCS system left a gap in resources since it required specific knowledge from plant personnel to maintain it. The refinery chose to migrate to a DCS Honeywell Experion. The project involved over 2500 I/O points, 40 process graphics, and 700 loops and included programming & configuration, panel design, startup & commissioning, operator training, and post-startup loop tuning. After DCS migration, the refinery was able to reduce its day-to-day maintenance. Now, using an intuitive HMI interface, it was able to close the resource gap with skilled personnel to troubleshoot and maintain the modern DCS system. The increase in personnel efficiency increased productivity for the facility. Narratives were developed to help operations and non-programmers understand how the system operates. In addition, operators contributed improvement to the control process, ultimately leading to improved production.
