Spotlight: John Binion, Process Safety Expert at Hargrove Controls & Automation

Since joining Hargrove Controls & Automation, John Binion has emerged as one of Hargrove’s leading process safety engineers, earning an appointment to represent the U.S. on an international committee developing standards for process safety.

Controls & Automation Engineer John Binion, P.E., FS Eng (TÜV Rheinland) started at Hargrove in 2016, focusing on safety instrumented system (SIS) design and configuration. As his work progressed at the company, John began working on SIS documentation, including safety integrity level (SIL) calculations, proof test procedures, and software requirements specification (SRS) development. John has recently been focused on facilitating process hazard analyses (PHAs) in the chemical processing industry. John enjoys the fact that his work at Hargrove is never the same, saying “Especially since I work primarily on PHAs, every project is a little different from what I already know and allows me to learn continuously.”

John has recently been accepted to serve on the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Technical Committee TC 56, which is managed in the U.S. by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). John will be working with the international membership to make sure that dependability standards are up to date and contain the newest methods and processes.

“John has become a respected authority on risk assessment, and his participation in TC 56 dependability standards committee will no doubt advance the field.  He has become a valuable member, not only of our process safety team, but for all of the Hargrove Controls & Automation division. John’s experience and professionalism make him a pivotal leader for our success,” said Chet Barton, Hargrove Controls & Automation’s process safety group lead.

Born in Odessa, TX, John later made his way to Louisiana where he attended Louisiana State University and earned a Bachelor of Science in computer engineering. Outside of work, John shares that he enjoys spending time in nature, “as long as it isn’t at a beach!” John’s hobbies also extend to indoor pursuits: he is a charter member of the Baton Rouge C&A book club. He jokes that when he gets time, he also likes to pretend he’s a woodworker.

John is the proud father of a two-and-a-half-year-old girl and is eagerly awaiting her baby brother due in December. Congratulations, John!

Of his experience with Hargrove, John said, “It has been a great opportunity that has allowed me to grow in a myriad of ways. This job has allowed me to learn so many new things and expand my horizons.”
